Taylor College’s IV clinical skills lab and assessment continuing education course can help provide your practical nurses, registered nurses, and certified medical assistants on staff with the knowledge and skills to deliver IV medications and fluids accurately and effectively – enhancing patient care and outcomes and reducing the risk of complications such as infections or injury.

IV Clinical Skills Lab and Assessment Continuing Education Course

  • Total Course Length: 36 Hours
  • Delivery Method: On-campus

This course includes 30 hours of online self-study followed by a 6-hour on-campus skills assessment.

The purpose of this course is to provide currently licensed practical nurses, registered/certified medical assistants, phlebotomists, and EMTs with comprehensive knowledge in IV therapy practice, including managing Central Venous (CV) lines. This course provides an overview of vein anatomy and physiology, indications for IV therapy, infection control and complications, central line management and dressing changes, scope of practice and limitations, parenteral therapy, blood components, IV insertion/removal, procedures for venipuncture, and nursing management for patients receiving IV therapy.

This first part of this course is designed to provide the student with 30 hours of continuing education in IV therapy.

The second part of this course covers hands-on skills training and a clinical practice assessment witnessed by a Registered Nurse to evaluate clinical application of knowledge and skills related to IV therapy.

Continuing Education courses are excluded from accreditation with the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, ABHES, and licensing from the Commission for Independent Education, CIE.
